During the mask project we learned about the cycle of socialization and liberation and the roles that these phenomenon can and do play on our society. We were tasked with making a mask of ourselves reflecting the way that we have been socialized through these processes and to write a seven paragraph essay displaying instances of these things in real life. We did many things that tied into the general topic of socialization as well. We read a book called “American Born Chinese”, we did surveys on Implicit Bias, We watched several documentaries such as MTVs “White People” and “Miss Representation”. We did all of this to get a vastly brodder depiction of how the cycle of socialization works on us.
I spent a lot of my time on this project just thinking. I spent weeks procrastinating and wondering what I was going to do and how I was going to do it. When it got down to the time to actually do something I was too far behind to start. I was far from responsible when it to the completion of this project. Long story short greatly misused my time. I tried to say something when I needed help but I did not know what I needed help with myself. The hardest part of this assignment for me personally was just the commitment. I did not want to commit to a particular design for my mask, and I didnt want to commit to a certain essay topic and that made it very difficult to stay motivated on writing something that I didn't even know wanted to do with. The final version of my essay, though had potential, was rushed, messy, and just all around poorly written in my opinion.
Over the course of this project I have learned alot about what it takes for me to stick with something and to keep with it. I have learned much MUCH more about my own self when it comes to things like my procrastination and lack of motivation. To be truthful I have no idea what motivates me to complete something I am able now to see just how my work ethic (or the lack thereof) is. During the course of this project was one of the more greatly more difficult times that I have faced in my life up to this point. I have learned so much about myself over the course of this project...
Mask Essay
It’s safe to say that parents could be the most influencing factor in anyone's life. In most cases, you will be with your parents from the time you are born until the time you are in your late adolescence to early adulthood. Spending this time with these people will certainly affect on you, right? How much of our own personality is based on what we see in our surroundings and from our friends and how much of what we learn is from our family around us? Between your friends, family, and different sources of media, which influences you the most?
Chances are that in this day in age you are a sibling to somebody. Whether you're a brother, sister, oldest, youngest, middle child, or the sixth child of a family of eleven we all have a place and a title. A study from Pew Research Center found that the majority of mothers in the united states as of 2014 ages 40 to 44 now have an average of 2.4 children (two kids). This data has decreased from 1976 data when it was more significantly more common to have four or more children. The state of Colorado also has a statistically higher ratio of children per household than many other US states.
During your younger life most of your influence will come from who you know, your family. You learn most things from your older siblings, you look up the them and aspire to be them, you do the things they do because you respect them. Or vise versa you have a younger sibling, you want to keep them safe, teach them whats wrong and what's right but there is still a stigma of “Do as I say, not as I do.”. Instead of learning from older siblings if you are a first born, you may take more influence after you parents or friends. You may look for different people to aspire to be and to look up to, such as your cousins, aunts, and uncles.
Your parents influence almost every single aspect of your young life. From birth to around age 12 they get to dictate everything you do, not even in a bad light. If you want or need anything at all you are to go to them. this you take impression after them. In most cases, you begin to take after their political views without even knowing it or having any perception of left or right. You adopt their moral views such as “Do we need better gun control?” or “Is abortion bad?” and make them into your own. You adopt their economic views of save and spend and their humor and aspects of their personality without even knowing it.
As you get older and start to coming out of childhood and progress into early adolescence you start to get your first tastes of freedom. For the first time you are able to go out of the house more and be with friends. You start to develop interpersonal relationships with people outside of your family and you begin to learn about cliques and where you fit in socially. Important aspects of personality start to form during this time such as style and musical taste. Not only to you start being able to experience culture to its fullest, but you begin to form your own true sense of individuality
